ARLINGTON, Texas — Matt Moore’s action in the preseason game at Dallas tonight lasted less than a minute before he was knocked out with a possible concussion just before halftime, and now the Dolphins will go without their back-up quarterback.

With 1:04 left in the second quarter, Moore ran for nine yards on a broken play and ended it with a slide to avoid contact. Dallas linebacker James Morris came flying in anyway and got him in the head, causing it to snap back for a hard hit on the turf.

Moore immediately left the game and was replaced by rookie Brandon Doughty. The Dolphins reported that he was being examined for concussion symptoms.

“I’m not going to call it dirty; obviously, it was illegal,” Ryan Tannehill said. “He’s clearly going down and the guy led with his helmet. I’m not going to call it dirty, but it’s definitely illegal. You hate to see it happen at any point, especially in a preseason game. I’m glad he’s going to be all right, but I hated to see that.”

Dolphins coach Adam Gase had no update on Moore after the game. He partially defended Morris for having to change course in an instant.

“I wish the guy was able to pull off or should have pulled off, but that’s what’s what happens sometimes,” he said. “We do have rules to try to protect guys when they’re defenseless. Sometimes in a split second decision, the guy makes the wrong decision.”
