Here are some things Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said Thursday:

• The last two weeks the defense has not played well. Two weeks ago, bad pass rush plan. Last week, the Ravens changed their typical plan to short passes. They tried to play tight coverage but were soft across the middle. Zone was too soft. Didn’t chase well in man coverage. An adjustment must be made as opponents have adjusted.

• Never easy to play without starters. We had some good defenses called, just didn’t play them well.

• It’s tough to be without Jelani Jenkins. When he has played, he has been half of what he is. Need time to allow him to get healthy.

• Larry Fitzgerald causes many problems because he’s a big man who plays the slot. A matchup with Bobby McCain could be an issue. Not easy to move another player there.

• Xavien Howard would be worked in slowly. It’s on Howard. He’ll use him when he says he’s ready. After practice today, hopefully he says he’s ready go.

• David Johnson’s ability to catch and run is Marshall Faulk-like.

• Effort is not the issue. More about the details. Not looking at big personnel changes. Too many mental errors. It’s Week 13. Everyone is watching the tape.

• Not even close how well Byron Maxwell is playing now compared to start of season. He was up for the challenge. Byron didn’t flinch. He’s putting in extra work. Extra film. Extra sprints. And he understands the system.

• Baltimore ran the same route four times on a short pass. A part of the problem was with a lack of experience in the back.

• Linebacker pass coverage has not been a shortcoming overall this season. Baltimore had been going deep pass all year and changed it up. It wasn’t a vertical day.

• Winning is more important than the dive to 25 in total defense ranking. Winning and points allowed are more important than yardage.

• Until the Dolphins show they can stop what Baltimore did Sunday, it’s going to be more of the same.
