EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.–It was already a long shot that Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill would make it back this season, and that sounds even less likely after NFL Network sideline reporter Heather Cox reported a troubling diagnosis during tonight’s game against the Jets.

Cox said Tannehill has a full cast on his left leg and “tore the MCL off the bone” in that knee.

The Dolphins initially feared a torn ACL, but coach Adam Gase said further evaluation showed a sprained ACL and MCL. The team did not place him on Injured Reserve this week, which suggested they were optimistic he could return for the season finale or a possible playoff game.

At the moment, Gase has only ruled Tannehill out for tonight and next Saturday’s game at Buffalo.
