ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.–The Dolphins’ 31-28 overtime win at Buffalo today was a big step toward making the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
Miami continues to control the race for a wildcard spot and can clinch if any of the following take place (using The New York Times‘ helpful playoff flowchart):
Scenario #1: Dolphins win at home vs. New England next weekend
That victory would put Miami at 11-5 and end the race. The Patriots likely will be a favorite at Hard Rock Stadium on Jan. 1, but it’s unknown whether they’ll have anything at stake. Miami lost at New England in Week 2, pushing back from 28 points down to fall 31-24.
Scenario #2: Denver loses or ties in any game
Regardless of what happens to the Dolphins next weekend, they’ll be in if the Broncos lose tomorrow night at Kansas City or the following week against the Raiders. One issue for Miami is that Oakland might not have much or anything at stake in that game.
Scenario #3: Kansas City loses its final two games
If the Chiefs don’t help the Dolphins tomorrow night, Miami needs them to fall apart completely. Denver can keep winning as long as Kansas City drops its finale at San Diego, which would put the Dolphins in even if they don’t beat New England.
