DAVIE–The Dolphins had their first practice of the week this afternoon and were missing several potential starters on defense.
It’s possible Miami will go into Sunday’s home game against the Patriots with no starting linebackers or safeties from the beginning of the season.
Here are coach Adam Gase’s thoughts after today’s practice:
— The Dolphins put Isa Abdul-Quddus on Injured Reserve because it was decisively clear that he wouldn’t be able to play any time in the next month.
— Regarding the Patriots’ running game, which is more of a strength for them than it’s been in a while, Gase said, “They’ve found a good groove. And when you get leads in a game, your rushing attempts go up.”
— Running back Jay Ajayi seems healthy enough after injuring his shoulder late in the Buffalo game. Gase expects him to play this weekend.
— Cornerback Byron Maxwell (ankle) worked on the side at today’s practice. “We don’t know where we’ll end up Sunday,” Gase said.
— Gase says he’s going forward with Matt Moore on quarterback on Sunday “unless somebody tells me different.” He did not rule out Ryan Tannehill when asked directly about that possibility Monday.
— The communication and cohesion between Moore and Gase has improved steadily. Gase says Moore is “everything you’d want players to be, at any position.”
