DAVIE — Miami Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi was named AFC offensive player of the week for a third time.
The last player to accomplish the feat?
Former Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino.
Ajayi has turned in one of the most statistically impressive seasons by any running back in NFL history.
Ajayi is sixth in the NFL with 1,213 yards, but incredibly, 624 of those yards (51 percent) have come in three games.
Ajayi has posted 214 and 206 against the Buffalo Bills and 204 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Last Saturday, Ajayi set up the game-winning overtime field goal at Buffalo with a 57-yard run.
“At the end of the day I feel like my body of work is starting to show itself,” Ajayi said after the game. “And I have all the confidence in myself. I believe my team has the confidence in me, knowing what I can do.”
Marino was AFC offensive player of the week three times in 1984, leading the Dolphins to a 14-2 record in his second season in the NFL.
Marino topped 500 yards passing six times that season, including the AFC Championship Game.
