DAVIE — Miami Dolphins fans have spoken and overwhelmingly voted for one player as 2016 team MVP: running back Jay Ajayi. A whopping 75 percent of the more than 2,400 participants in a Twitter poll conducted by the Palm Beach Post’s Daily Dolphins clicked for Ajayi.
It would have seemed improbable at the start of the season. But Ajayi ran for more than 200 yards in a game three times this season, twice against the Buffalo Bills and once against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Only Ricky Williams has ever rushed for more yards in a season as a Dolphin.
In fact, it was Ajayi’s performance against the Steelers that sparked Miami’s turnaround from 1-4 to the playoffs. Ajayi’s toughness, tackle-breaking, determination and angry running style rubbed off on his teammates. Because of Ajayi’s sudden success, coach Adam Gase scrapped a no-huddle offense and focused on a new identity: physical running.
Ajayi has proven he can run over defenders, make defenders miss, pass catch and utilize breakaway speed. Miami didn’t know what it had in the fifth-rounder out of Boise State, but they do now.
Jay Ajayi is the Miami Dolphins’ 2016 Fan MVP, finishing ahead of Cameron Wake, Ryan Tannehill and Ndamukong Suh. And it wasn’t even close. Check it out:
