LAKE BUENA VISTA — Miami native T.Y. Hilton is such a fan of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry he asked his fellow Pro Bowler to swap jerseys this week.
Landry, who obliged, is due a big contract soon, Hilton suggested.
And Hilton says anyone who tries to use Landry’s 5-feet-11 status as a knock is out of line.
After all, Hilton, the former Florida International star, is shorter.
“They say he’s 5-11?” Hilton said after an AFC Pro Bowl practice. “Well, I’m 5-9. Yeah. Size is nothing. For us, as long as you’ve got heart, you can play in this league. So, for Juice man, he’s going to be all right. His play is really doing the talking. Especially with his 100 catches. That speaks. His game is next level.”
Before the 2015 season, Hilton agreed to a 5-year, $65 million contract extension ($13 million/season) that will likely be among the comparables raised by Landry’s representative.
That deal included $28 million in guarantees.
Hilton: 4.8 catches, 75.1 yards, 0.4 touchdowns per career game
Landry: 6.0 catches, 63.6 yards, 0.3 touchdowns per career game
What mindset did Hilton have when his representative was trying to secure an extension?
“You really want to get it out of the way, but it’s in the back of your mind that you’re playing your last year, with your big contract coming up,” Hilton said. “So for you, you’ve just got to control what you can control. Just go out there and play and let your agent take care of the rest.”
