DAVIE–With reports spreading that a New York real estate developer is on the cusp of buying the Marlins, Stephen Ross was one obvious candidate to by the mystery man behind that deal.
While it has yet to be revealed who plans to buy the team for a reported $1.6 billion, a source said it is not Ross.
Ross, who became majority owner of the Dolphins in 2009, has long been rumored as being interested in purchasing the Marlins. While there are reports that there’s a “handshake deal” to buy the team from Jeffrey Loria, the Marlins have declined comment on the situation.
The NFL generally does not permit owners to have teams in other leagues, but has exceptions to that rule including if both teams are in the same market.
