It’s been a frustrating fall for cornerback Bené Benwikere.
He began last season as a starter for the defending NFC champion Carolina Panthers and lost his job with them after a nightmare game trying to cover Atlanta’s Julio Jones. The Dolphins immediately snatched him up, but he never got on the field. Now he’s off to Cincinnati, where he signed today.
Miami picked up Benwikere, 25, at a time when it badly needed cornerback help, but his arrival coincided with Byron Maxwell’s resurgence. He was inactive his first three weeks with the Dolphins and spent the rest of the year on the practice squad.
“He needs to show us that he’s ready to play,” defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said in December. “If he does that, we can bring him up and he can help us, hopefully. But he was brought in to be in that role (of a nickel corner). So, hopefully going forward he can prove he can help us and we’ll play him.”
