INDIANAPOLIS–The Dolphins definitely need help up front defensively after the worst run defense season in franchise history, and they’ll likely look for a linebacker with the No. 22 overall pick in this year’s draft.
With the secondary in solid shape, any defensive players Miami picks will probably be in the front seven. NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock believes they should target linebackers Zach Cunningham, Jarrad Davis or Haason Reddick.
“I’m very much a Haason Reddick guy, and if he tests well at the combine, I think he’s going to come from nowhere to being… perhaps a late first-round pick,” Mayock said. “Then you start talking about the edge guys. I really like Derek Barnett. I think Tim Williams is going to slide a little bit with the off-the-field stuff, but he’s more of a 3-4 guy.
“Derek Barnett, Solomon Thomas, Taco Charlton, I think they’re all 4-3 guys and really all first-round picks… There are eight guys that I have potential first-round grades on the edge. So anybody looking for an edge in the first round is going to find them.”
The Dolphins’ first three selections are Nos. 22, 54 and 97 overall.
