Turns out Jason Taylor might not be the only Dolphin entering the Hall of Fame this summer.
In about a week, Larry Csonka will learn if he’s a Hall of Famer, too.
Now if by chance you’re stroking your mustache, thinking, “Isn’t Csonka in the Hall of Fame already?”, you’re on the right track.
While Csonka is indeed in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he’s now awaiting the ultimate honor: possible induction into the International Mustache Hall of Fame. There’s even a video on NFL.com promoting his candidacy.
The video points out that Csonka led the 1972 Dolphins to the NFL’s only perfect season “with the perfect mustache.” It concludes with Zonk himself saying, “I’m Larry Csonka and I approved this message. And this mustache.”
As if you didn’t know, the mustache hall is run by the “American Mustache Institute” (slogan: Make America Sexy Again), whose scientific studies claim “a mustache improves good looks by more than 38 percent.”
The mustache hall’s stated goal is “to combat the discrimination of those who adopt and embrace the lifestyle of facial hair.” Current Hall of Famers include Burt Reynolds and Rollie Fingers.
Without splitting hairs, Csonka’s candidacy began via the public nomination process and is being studied by the “Inductee Commission,” which does “a thorough quantitative and qualitative analysis.” It’s uncertain whether congressional approval also is required.
On Thursday, March 9, the Class of 2017 will be announced. Why March 9? That marks the passing of William Howard Taft on March 8, 1930.
