Miami Dolphins are giving restricted free agent linebacker Kiko Alonso a first-round tender at $3.91 million, per league source.

The Dolphins and Alonso’s representation can continue to discuss a long-term extension, but this virtually guarantees that he will remain with the club in 2017.

Alonso wants to stay in Miami long-term. And the Dolphins would like to keep Alonso in Miami long-term.

But because Alonso is a restricted free agent, the club needed to extend an offer before 4 p.m. Thursday.

If another club wants to sign Alonso to a long-term deal, not only would the Dolphins have a right to match. But that club would have to yield a first-round pick, which is extremely unlikely.

Alonso started 15 games for the Dolphins in 2016, recording 115 tackles, two interceptions, four passes defended, one forced fumble and four fumble recoveries.

Alonso has the versatility to play inside and outside linebacker, though inside is his preferred position.
