The Miami Dolphins exceeded expectations in Adam Gase’s first season as a head coach, winning 10 games and qualifying for the playoffs.
But a deeper dive into the statistics reveal many close victories in the clutch masked the fact the Dolphins were actually outscored by 17 points last season.
Miami also finished 24th in the NFL on offense and 29th on defense in total yards. So by no means does Gase or the Dolphins organization believe it is anywhere close to the desired final destination.
Gase’s message to the Dolphins on Monday, the first meeting with the team since last season ended, reflected the idea that there is much work to do. And that last season is in the rear-view mirror.
Gase explained his message during a conversation with John Congemi on the club’s official website.
“I want our team to just understand that we’re starting over, we’re 0-0,” Gase said. “The last thing we can do is just rest on last year. It’s basically dead and gone and we’re moving forward. And our job is to get better every day. And it starts today, for us. So bring your ‘A’ game every day. Make sure you’re learning from every experience that you have. Whether it be through a meeting or on the field or through a workout. And find ways to improve. Don’t be complacent on what has happened in the past. Because at the end of the day, we’re being evaluated on this season.”
The Dolphins could easily take a step back in 2017 if improvements in talent, game-planning and execution are not made. Gase and the organization does believe an evolving culture and many players’ knowledge base of Gase and his staff and Miami’s schemes will provide some advantages next season.
“When you have guys that have already been here, they can guide the guys that are new,” Gase said. “And just understanding how we like to do things, from every aspect, between meetings, and training, and when we get on the field, how we like to do things at practice. Just being able to have guys that can show them this is how we like to do it. And this is something we’re probably going to emphasize.”
