One year in, Dolphins clicking with Gase, Tannenbaum, Grier at top

MIAMI BEACH—Stephen Ross might’ve finally hit the right combination of football people to run the Miami Dolphins.

The trio of coach Adam Gase, vice president Mike Tannenbaum and general manager Chris Grier is in its second offseason together and seems to be running smoothly. There have been few, if any, philosophical clashes to this point and no signs of dysfunction.

“There’s not a lot of conflict there,” team president Tom Garfinkel said at a Fins Weekend golf outing this morning. “There’s a lot of healthy debate. People know their roles. When that’s the case, things usually work out pretty well.

“I think it’s clear: the players know that Adam’s their boss. Adam’s the guy driving the culture in that locker room and on the field. You’ve got to have that to create a winning culture. The values are similar, the standards are high. When that’s the case, over time, things tend to work out pretty well.”

Garfinkel sat in on the team’s NFL Draft process last month and was impressed by the way Gase, Tannenbaum and Grier targeted and landed players (Grier is the point man for the draft). He said he saw a lot of “respectful, healthy debate going back and forth” as they made picks.

In the first year of this management team, the Dolphins jumped from 6-10 to 10-6 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2008. They did that despite starting out 1-4.

The talk going into Gase’s second season has centered around sharpening all aspects of the scheme. Rather than learning a new system like they did last year, the Dolphins should be close to full speed when they start Organized Team Activities on Tuesday.

That also extends to the overarching expectations about the way things run in Davie.

“Adam Gase is a fantastic leader,” Garfinkel said. “He’s changed the culture in that building dramatically. This is a person who’s very intelligent, extremely competitive. And the coaching staff he’s put together, the relationship he’s built with the players… Adam is doing a fantastic job and everybody’s really excited about the season coming up right now.”
