Adam Gase says Jordan Phillips’ turnaround more than just talk

DAVIE–Remember all that talk from defensive tackle Jordan Phillips about changing his mindset and getting more consistent with his effort? Dolphins coach Adam Gase is buying it.

Phillips, a self-described disappointment in his first two seasons, can say whatever he wants about his approach but he knows the proof will be in his play. So far, there seems to be evidence that his offseason is going well.

“He’s very difficult for us to block right now,” Gase said today. “He’s had those good days and bad days in the past. What I’ve seen so far out of the guy (this spring) is consistency. That’s the biggest thing for us.

“If you’re (Ndamukong) Suh and you know the guy next to you is constantly doing the right thing and you know you can trust that guy, that’s a huge part of our defense. That front is what we lean on. We count on those guys being right. (Phillips’) best ball is really what we’re going to need this year. The reason why is we’ve got four of those guys on that front line and now you start adding some depth to that, it makes it very difficult for teams to prepare for us.”

Phillips, Miami’s second-round pick in 2015, has been criticized publicly by the coaching staff over the past year for his inconsistency and admitted to it Tuesday. He sounded like someone ready to change the trajectory of his career, and he’s the leading candidate to be the Dolphins’ starter next to Suh.

One point Gase was unwilling to discuss, though, was Phillips’ weight. Phillips said he’s trying to get down to 320 pounds after playing at 336 last year, but said Tuesday he was 335. Gase declined to say whether that weight goal was set by Phillips or the staff.
