Miami Dolphins’ Matt Moore says Jakeem Grant is ‘a guy you’ve kind of grown to love’

Matt Moore’s meeting with the media Wednesday was a reminder of the unique perspective he has on training camp as not just a veteran, but as the Dolphins’ backup quarterback who tests himself against a revamped secondary while often lining up with receivers fighting for a roster spot.

Here are some observations from Moore about them:

Undrafted rookie CB Torry McTyer (UNLV): “Made a lot of plays. We had to ask early in camp who’s No. 5? We know who he is now because he’s been around the ball. Kind of likes to dish it out a little bit and that’s what you want in a defensive back.”

Second-year CB Xavien Howard: “He’s just playing really fast. A lot of tight coverage. He seems confident. I’ve noticed that a lot. Really, the whole secondary, coverage has been tight and those guys are doing a really good job.”

CB Cordrea Tankersley (the No. 3 pick): “Physical, competitive, confident.”

Second-year WR Jakeem Grant: “He understands the offense so much more than last year. He’s been a guy you’ve kind of grown to love out there.”

Grant had been used primarily as a return man because of his speed, but Moore made an interesting comment about Grant as a wide receiver: “He’s been a guy you’ve kind of grown to love out there and you know he’s going to be where he’s supposed to be and he can make things happen when the ball’s in his hands.”

Second-year WR Leonte Carroo: “Strong as always. I think that’s his strong suit, his strength. He’s bailed me out on a couple of throws.”

Who stands out among undrafted WRs? “Drew Morgan has done a really nice job coming in, picking up the offense, understanding what he’s trying to do. I think Malcom’s (UM’s Malcolm Lewis) done a good job.”
