DAVIE — Don’t fit Laremy Tunsil for the gold Hall of Fame jacket just yet.
It turns out, Tunsil has been just okay in spring and summer Miami Dolphins practices.
Yes, Tunsil has quick feet and herculean strength and all the potential in the world.
But so far, he’s been, just “solid” according to offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen.
“He hasn’t been perfect but he looks at home there,” Christensen said Thursday. “He is what we all thought he was. He has a chance to be really good. He’s had some ups and downs. It’s really good practice for him going against this defensive line. We haven’t handled them well, but there will be some benefit down the road. We’ll get better and better and better, and hopefully when the games come, we won’t see any tougher situations than we’re seeing even in practice.”
Dolphins offensive line coach Chris Foerster had similar sentiments about Tunsil, who is now adjusting to a transition back to left tackle after playing left guard as a rookie.
“It’s been a great transition the whole offseason,” Foerster said. “It’s like going back home. He played well at guard last year, but it was a whole different learning experience for him. This year, he’s back where he’s been his whole life.”
How good can Tunsil be?
“That’s up to him – as hard as he wants to work, as hard as he wants to prepare himself on a weekly and daily based to be a great player,” Foerster said. “He has all the tools to be a really, really, really good player. I have a bunch of tools in my trunk and I don’t really know how to use them, so it doesn’t do much if I don’t know how to use them. He’s done a great job at this point. I’m not saying that he doesn’t, but like anything, it’s a process, still getting to be a top-flight player and he’s working towards that.””
Christensen said when something goes wrong (rookie defensive end Charles Harris has won a few battles) Tunsil bounces back quickly.
“He’s always been delightful,” Christensen said. “He’s an easy-going guy. Always takes it as it comes . I think that’s what’s going to make him a really, really good left tackle. Something bad happens, he learns and moves on to the next play. It’s one of the really good characteristics he has. He has a nice short memory and an even-keeled personality which is a good characteristic to have at left tackle.”
