Odyssey of Miami Dolphins’ Matt Moore: High expectations, low aspirations ‘in a weird way’

DAVIE — Matt Moore shook off five years of inactivity and rust seemingly instantly last season. In doing so, he kept the Dolphins on their playoff path after quarterback Ryan Tannehill went down.

In doing so, Moore seems to have reminded himself what he can do.

“I think my expectations are higher this year,” he said.

His expectations may be higher, but his aspirations are lower. Moore knows there’s only one way for him to show he’s a better quarterback at age 32 than he ever has been, including the 2011 season when he was the Dolphins’ MVP. That route would be another Tannehill injury.

So, in a bizarre way, Moore is hoping he begins another streak of snapless seasons.

“In a weird way, if you’re going to put that in there, yeah,” Moore said. “Like I said, my job is to be ready, just like last year, at the drop of a hat. Do I hope that happens? Absolutely not. But if it does, I think Adam and I both would be that much better working with each other.”

Moore has a long list of ways he can be better, many revolving around the fact it’s his second season under coach Adam Gase. Moore wants to be more consistent, have greater command of the offense and a better understanding of what Gase hopes to accomplish.

Moore didn’t want to compare Gase to other quarterback coaches he has had but it’s clear there’s mutual respect.

“He is different, though,” Moore said.

Gase manages to straddle a fence. At times, “He treats us like colleagues,” Moore said.

But at other times? Moore laughed. “We know what he expects and if it (the result) is not that, we know very quickly,” he said.
