Miami Dolphins mulling Ryan Tannehill injury, Matt Moore

DAVIE–Everything is fluid for the Dolphins when it comes to their quarterback situation. Ryan Tannehill remains in question with a significant knee injury, and there’s no certainty the team would move forward with backup Matt Moore if there’s an extended absence.

Dolphins coach Adam Gase said this morning it’s still possible Tannehill will undergo season-ending surgery after re-injuring his left knee in Thursday’s practice. There’s also a potential option to rehab it, which could keep alive the possibility of returning after the first month of the season. He was coming off a partial tear in his ACL and a sprained MCL in that knee, which sidelined him in December.

“We’re still getting—I wouldn’t say second and third (medical opinions), but we’re probably going deeper than that,” Gase said in his first comments since Tannehill got hurt. “Talking to a lot of people and just making sure we get all the right information, then we’ll make a decision after that.”

The first decision is surgery or rehab, and there’s no timetable on that. The second one is whether the Dolphins are prepared to go into the season with Moore as the starter. They open the preseason Thursday against Atlanta and still have more than a month until their Sept. 10 regular-season opener.

Moore took over for Tannehill last year and steered the team to a playoff berth over the final four games, but there are intriguing free agents available. Gase was noncomittal about bringing in any quarterbacks.

“I haven’t really got there yet,” he said. “Yesterday was a tough day. (Tannehill) going through that—Seeing how hard he worked to be back out there and go through the spring and a lot of things he did to make sure everything was good and he felt great, it caught him off guard a little bit. Seeing him like that was tough.”

When pressed on whether Moore is cemented as his No. 1 quarterback now, Gase said, “Right now, Matt is our quarterback. We’ll see where we go from there because I’ve gotta figure out what’s going on with Ryan. We’ll make decisions after that.”
