MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase said he’s spoken with quarterback Jay Cutler recently and that the quarterback is interested in the Miami Dolphins.
Gase said he had one conversation with Cutler, simply to ask if he was interested.
“He was interested,” Gase said. “I think he’s trying to figure out everything. I mean, you don’t expect this to happen. I don’t think he looked at our situation. He was surprised and he has things to work through.”
Cutler and Gase had success together in Chicago, when the quarterback posted a career-high in passer rating in 2015, one year before Ryan Tannehill did the same with Miami.
Gase confirmed Miami needs to sign a quarterback, even if Tannehill does not require season-ending surgery. Gase said he needs more information on Tannehill before he would know what the role of an incoming quarterback would be.
“We’ve had a lot of people call us, we’ve talked to a few people,” Gase said. “We’re keeping all our options on the table. A lot of the things that are out there aren’t really what we’re doing. It’s kind of funny to watch.”
Cutler has been preparing to broadcast games. How long would it take Cutler to get game-ready?
“When I get there, I’ll be able to tell you,” Gase said. “I don’t think it’s even close to anything right now. So like I said I had one conversation with him and that’s where we’re at… When I know more, hopefully in the next few days, I’ll have a better idea.”
Gase said he was annoyed at a report that Cutler had agreed to a 1-year contract, as that is false.
Cutler also did not “demand anything” as far as being a starter, if he was to come to Miami.
“Comments about him in the media, it’s not like he’s talking to anybody,” Gase said. “He’ll talk to me.”
Gase said he does not have an update on the health status of Tannehill, who re-injured his knee in practice on Thursday.
“We’re trying to figure out all of our options and put them on the table,” Gase said. “We’re waiting for a few more opinions to come in. We’re in no rush.”
