Miami Dolphins’ Jordan Phillips: ‘Ask the coaches’ why I’m benched

MIAMI GARDENS — A very calm and composed Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Jordan Phillips said repeatedly on Saturday that he’s not the man to explain why he hasn’t been a starter in practice recently, and didn’t start an open scrimmage at Hard Rock Stadium.

“You guys have got to talk to the coaches about that,” Phillips said. “I’m not in their heads.”

Rookie fifth-rounder Davon Godchaux drew the starting assignment and coach Adam Gase explained.

“We’re competing every day,” Gase said. “It could be a different guy every day running with the ones. Whoever has the best day the day before, he’ll be the starter the next day. We’ll just keep going back and forth. They’ve both had their opportunities.”

Phillips explained this off-season that he’s come to realize he needs to bring his motor every play.

So, has he been?

“You have to ask the coaches,” Phillips said. “I’m doing everything in my power to stay consistent. But it doesn’t matter what I say. It matters what they say.”

For the record, defensive coordinator Matt Burke recently said Phillips is doing fine.

Burke said Phillips has had only one poor practice.

But it’s clear the Dolphins feel Phillips, who has not yet lived up to his draft status, must be pushed.

“It doesn’t matter how I feel,” Phillips said. “They’re the ones evaluating. They’re the ones that have to tell me how I’ve been practicing. We’ll go off what they say.”

Phillips says being a starter is important to him.

“I mean of course it does,” Phillips said. “I want to be the first one out there, last one, too. So we’ll see what happens. We’ll see what happens when Game one rolls around.”
