Miami Dolphins: How Jay Cutler stayed in decent shape

DAVIE — When Adam Gase reached out to Jay Cutler after Ryan Tannehill’s injury, the message was succinct.

“In shape?” Gase asked.

“Good to go,” Cutler replied.

It took a little cajoling from Gase and Cutler’s wife, Kristin Cavallari, but Cutler will be the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in 2017.

Cutler said in general, he feels fine.

“The good thing is I play quarterback, so I don’t really have to be in that great of a cardiovascular shape,” Cutler said. “But I’ll be fine. Adam knows kind of what I’ve been up to, so we’ll figure it out along the way.”

So what kind of activity did Cutler have while also preparing to be a Fox broadcaster?

“Well we’ve got two boys so we’re always doing something,” Cutler said. “I’d go down to Vandy and do some stuff down there. And I was playing basketball in the mornings and there were football camps there. You’re around it. It will come back pretty quickly. I’m not worried about my arm and the throwing part.”

Cutler said he was more concerned about getting to know his teammates.

As for the surgically-repaired shoulder than ended his last Bears season?

“It’s good,” Cutler said. “By March, I was cleared on that one. I’m a little behind these guys. They’ve been going through training camp and stuff like that. I’m not quite there yet, but it won’t take me long.”
