DAVIE — Miami Dolphins cornerback Tony Lippett will miss the season due to a torn achilles injury, coach Adam Gase said Tuesday.
Lippett was Miami’s third outside cornerback entering the season after playing 16 games, with 13 starts, last season.
“He’ll be having surgery,” Gase said. “So that was obviously a little surprise yesterday halfway through practice.”
Gase did not downplay the significance of the loss.
“Any time you lose a guy that started for you, that’s not ideal,” Gase said. “But that’s why we’ve collected the depth that we have. And that’s why we’re trying to get young players to go because this is what happens. So we have to just keep developing these young players and that’s why every year we’re drafting a guy or really when we get to college free agency we feel like we’ve found a couple of guys this year. And we just want them to keep proving it to us. And we feel like we’re pretty deep there. And we’ve just got to keep getting these guys better.”
Lippett was drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 draft, a converted wide receiver from Michigan State.
Former defensive coordinator Vance Joseph cited Lippett as one of the defense’s most improved players last season.
Bobby McCain is Miami’s starting slot cornerback. The Dolphins signed Alterraun Verner, a veteran who can play inside and outside.
The Dolphins drafted Cordrea Tankersley in the third round out of Clemson this year although he has not made an immediate impact. Undrafted cornerback Torry McTyer has impressed at times.
“We’ve got a lot of guys that are competing right now,” Gase said. “So we’re just going to keep looking for the best fit for us. I like how our young guys play. And those guys just keep getting better and we’ll get in good shape.”
Gase said Lippett’s injury was a non-contact play.
“He jumped up and came down and no one touched him and that was it,” Gase said.
The Dolphins have been devastated by injury since camp began.
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill (knee) and linebacker Raekwon McMillan (knee) are done for the season. Guard Ted Larsen (biceps) will miss at least eight games.
The Dolphins have also sustained injuries to Jay Ajayi (concussion), Kenyan Drake (concussion).
Gase is uncertain how much, if at all, offensive line starters Mike Pouncey (hip), right tackle Ja’Wuan James (shoulder) or guard Kraig Urbik (back) will play in Thursday’s preseason game against the Ravens.
