Miami Dolphins’ Byron Maxwell: Blame me for busted TD

PHILADELPHIA — Miami Dolphins cornerback Byron Maxwell said to blame him for a 50-yard touchdown pass Carson Wentz completed to Torrey Smith on Thursday night.

The Eagles took a 7-0 lead when Maxwell allowed Smith to continue running away from him and safety Reshad Jones couldn’t close to break up the play in time.

“It was a bust on my part,” Maxwell said. “I saw the guy running the ‘7’ and I thought to come off. I should have just kept on the post. I had him covered, I should have just stayed on the post.”

Maxwell had a tough return trip to Philadelphia. He had declared his hope to show the Eagles they were mistaken to trade him away to Miami after only one season.

But Maxwell was targeted several times Thursday night and he allowed a handful of big passing plays in joint practices on Monday and Tuesday.

“This game right here helps a lot,” Maxwell said. “You can always learn from your failures. So I’m going to go back and study this game and it should help a lot… We obviously had the long bust. That was on us. A lot of things to correct that was our fault.”

The Dolphins allowed 25 first downs and 274 passing yards to the Eagles.

“Everybody has to do their job, basically,” Maxwell said. “That’s really what it was today, me included. That bust was pretty big. That was the start of things. We should have been off the field.”
