Miami Dolphins have their Mike Pouncey plan basically settled

DAVIE—Figuring out a way to keep Mike Pouncey on the field for 16 games is one of the most complicated and essential tasks the Dolphins have this season.

Coming off another hip surgery and a season in which he played just five games, the team has significantly cut back his workload. He did not participate in 11-on-11 drills until the 12th practice of training camp and did not play until the third preseason game.

The Dolphins have settled into a routine of Pouncey practicing every other day and usually taking four reps per period, and coach Adam Gase said that’s pretty much their plan for the first week of the regular season. If that works, they’ll likely stick with it.

“We’ve been pretty consistent on what we’ve been doing,” Gase said. “We’re going to see our practice schedule, when we finalize that, as far as what we’re going to do that first week. How that week goes is just going to be somewhat experimental for us, but we have a good idea of what we want to do, and he’s on board with it.

“Now it’s just going to be, how do we feel week after week? Do we need to make an adjustment? So we’re going to be very flexible with this. Really it’s going to be communication with him to see how he feels, and then every week could be different.”

It’s not easy situation to manage, but it’s worth the trouble. Pouncey made three straight Pro Bowls prior to last season, and the Dolphins’ offense played its best stretch of games when he was on the field last year.

The team has been using Anthony Steen as its primary backup center when Pouncey is out.
