OXNARD, Calif. — The Rey Maualuga watch continues.
Maualuga continued to do conditioning work on the side Thursday as the Dolphins practiced for their season-opener Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Maualauga, the former Bengals veteran linebacker signed as a free agent, may still be working to get down to playing weight. Coach Adam Gase has not confirmed Maualuga has reached that point yet.
Maualuga also has a hamstring injury.
“That kind of came up last week when we were ending the week of practice,” Gase said. “We had a little bit of a setback. We’re going to keep working on him, strengthening him, getting him ready. We’re looking at this thing as duration. We’ve got a long ways to go. We’ve got a couple of new guys at that position right now so we’re trying to get everybody caught up to speed as fast as possible.”
Gase wouldn’t flat-out declare Maualuga out for the Chargers game.
“We’ll see how this week goes but I can’t give you a definite answer right now,” Gase said.
Running back Jay Ajayi, who has a knee problem, made it through the entire practice Wednesday and was participating in the portion of the Thursday workout open to the media.
