Highlights of Dolphins associate head coach/special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi’s huddle with the media Thursday:

  • Says “you’re always concerned” when your guy misses an extra point. “He actually hit a good ball. It was a technique flaw. I’m not overly concerned about it.”
  • On Jakeem Grant’s drop: “He relaxed a little bit. We have to make sure he finishes the play.” Another theme around league, 4-5 muffs.
  • Jarvis Landry remains in the rotation on punt returns. Depends on situation.
  • On punt coverage: Credits Michael Thomas. “We’re a little bit sloppy with technique stuff.”
  • Says rest and sleep will be key during trip to London.
  • On FG block, kickers average 1.25 to 1.3 seconds in getting ball off. Bobby McCain has knack for getting there. “Bobby’s really worked at that. He enjoys doing it. It’s one thing he’s really been accountable for.” Says it’s not always about getting hand on the ball, but making the kicker feel that edge pressure.
  • On kickoffs, Cody Parkey can drive ball deep into end zone when asked. Sometimes coaches have asked him to kick shorter and rely on coverage to keep teams inside the 25.
  • Goal on hang time is over 5 seconds. Average punt hangs up about 4.5; 5.25 is elite. Says it sounds like small amount of time but it’s major.
