DAVIE — The U.S. was eliminated from contention for next year’s World Cup, and Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi is not happy.
A 2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday helped assure that the U.S. won’t participate in the tournament for the first time since 1986.
Or, to put it another way, it’s a first in Ajayi’s lifetime.
“That’s a disappointment,” Ajayi said. “Anyone who knows how big a tournament the World Cup is, for the USA not to be there is completely disappointing and probably very embarrassing.”
Ajayi said he’ll be rooting for Nigeria and his native England at the World Cup. Both nations have clinched qualification.
He just hopes he can also root for the USA in 2022.
“Hopefully they can pick it up and make it to the next one,” Ajayi said.
