Pressure’s on? Dolphins K Cody Parkey says “it’s cool” to make game winners

DAVIE—The Jupiter Juggernaut knows no fear. It meant nothing to Cody Parkey that he went nearly all of Sunday’s game against the Jets without kicking a field goal, then was ushered out for a 39-yarder to win it with 26 seconds left. On top of that, the playing field at Hard Rock Stadium had significantly deteriorated by that point.

Nonetheless, he was at ease.

Parkey nailed the kick to give the Dolphins a 31-28 victory, making it three game winners for him since joining his childhood team a week before the season began.

“I don’t think about it much,” he said. “Whether it’s an extra point or a field goal, I just go out there saying, ‘Put it through,’ and go through my routine. It definitely gets your confidence going after you hit a few of them.

“It’s cool to make those kicks and help your team out. I just go in every week trying to do what I can. Whatever I’ve done in the past doesn’t matter anymore. Now I move on to this game.”

It’s starting to seem like nothing gets his pulse racing. One of the attributes that has endeared Parkey to the coaching staff in his brief time with Miami is his steadiness. He’s fairly emotionless on the field and he believes that’s a big part of why he’s kicked well.

It’s also becoming evident that the Dolphins are more confident in Parkey than they ever were in Andrew Franks. Depending on the conditions and game situation, they feel reasonably confident letting him try anything up to 60 yards.

While he won’t put a number on his maximum distance, he made a career-long 54-yarder with room to spare to beat the Chargers with 1:57 remaining in the opener.

“They’ve been good so far,” he said. “That makes it easier on me when I see it go right down the middle instead of flirting with the post.”

Parkey is now 8 for 8 on field goals this season, including three makes of 40 yards or longer.
