Miami Dolphins’ Adam Gase: We let owner Stephen Ross down

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross in a happier moment.

DAVIE — The last time Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase spoke with team owner Stephen Ross was last Saturday night.

Somehow, the Dolphins were still alive for an NFL playoff spot at that moment. As Gase explained, he and the other members of the organization are disappointed they were unable to reach the playoffs, something that is obviously important to Ross.

“I know what his expectations were and they’ve always been the same,” Gase said Wednesday. “(Ross) wants to win. He wants to have a chance to play in the tournament. And we didn’t get that done this year. I’m sure that’s disappointing for him. He does everything he can to be supportive to us. And he gives us everything we possibly need. And for me and I know Mike (Tannenbaum) and Chris (Grier) feel the same, you feel like you let him down.”

Gase’s Dolphins were 10-6 and made the playoffs last season. If the Dolphins don’t beat the Bills on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium, that script will flip to 6-10 and focus will shift to Miami’s high first-round draft choice.

Gase said Ross’ message has always focused on grinding and finding ways to get the players better.

“He gives us so much,” Gase said. “We have to find a way to be more consistent throughout the season. We have to find a way to put ourselves in position. We were lucky enough these last two weeks to be in position to at least have a shot. And we didn’t get it done. But we need to put ourselves in better position to where we’re not fighting for our playoff lives, to where, we’re hoping for eight teams to lose, for us to have a chance.”
