What Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Matt Burke said Thursday

Here is some of what Dolphins defensive coordinator Matt Burke said Thursday:

• The run defense has been fairly solid.

• Takeaways and red zone have not been good enough. Third downs have been good but not the last two weeks.

• We are always seeking the right hybrid player to cover those dominant opposing tight ends.

• Obviously we want more sacks and more production from the guys up front. Cam Wake has had a good season in disruption. It’s more than sacks. It’s pressures. And batted balls. Charles Harris has shown some progress. It’s disappointing to be in the bottom five in an important stat.

• It’s on the defense to help the offense more.

• He has not questioned the system, but schemes are constantly evolving. Week to week the coaches are adjusting.

• The team has identified young players who fit approach wise and mindset and culture wise.

• T.J. McDonald could be one of those hybrid guys. He’s a big safety. He has a skill set but they’re a bit thin at safety right now. So maybe McDonald would have gotten some more looks closer to line.

• Kiko Alonso’s stats are different to Matt Burke than others. Do you have a better option? It’s not just Kiko. Sometimes they feel Kiko is the best matchup. Sometimes T.J. McDonald or Stephone Anthony. Kiko has hit moments when he makes plays. Kiko has his moments when he makes plays.

• It has been a very under-reported story that Andre Branch has been playing through real injuries.
