Adam Gase: Ryan Tannehill is our starting QB; full-go in spring

DAVIE — Ryan Tannehill is the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in 2018, coach Adam Gase said in Wednesday’s season-ending news conference.

And Gase also further explained why Tannehill never had that knee surgery before last season.

“Yeah, I see him as our quarterback next season,” Gase said. “And that’s any player. I mean anybody can go down at any moment. Really I don’t look at it as two injuries. I look at it as he had the knee, we were advised and so was he to handle it a certain way and it didn’t work out. So you know, that’s kind of the part of the business that’s tough. Where we went with the advice we all thought was good for us. And it didn’t work out. Now next year we get him back. And he’ll probably be stronger than he’s ever been.”

Some have suggested Tannehill had two separate knee injuries. But it would seem logical that the injuries which ended each of the last two Tannehill seasons are somewhat related.

We’ll never know all of what my have been, but Gase is excited to go back to Tannehill, who is 8-5 as a starter under Gase. When Tannehill is not his starter, Gase is 8-12.

“We’re going to get him back next year and we’ll have a full slate with the spring training camp and preseason,” Gase said, further indicating Tannehill’s rehabilitation is on an excellent track.

Jay Cutler isn’t returning to back up Tannehill, so what about David Fales or Brandon Doughty?

“We’ll how how everything plays out,” Gase said. “We’ve got a long way to go whether it be free agency or the draft. We’ll see if one of these young guys that we have develops. Over that time. You know, I like what David did in this last game. I thought he did a good job. He battled for four quarters. Gave us a shot. And we’re going to see where all this goes.”
