Miami Dolphins DE William Hayes brings ‘lunch pail to work’

William Hayes has a larger-than-life personality, but after signing with the Miami Dolphins, he wanted to make it clear he takes his job seriously.

“I play the run fairly well,” Hayes said. “I think I’m pretty good from a leadership role. I want to kind of come in and create an image, when guys see a guy coming in working hard and bringing his lunch pail to work every day.”

Hayes gained notoriety for his theories on mermaids, dinosaurs and the moon. But he is a more-than-competent defensive lineman.

And he realizes he’s probably a depth/role player behind Cameron Wake and Andre Branch.

“Whatever role they want me to play,” Hayes said. “Whatever role I can help the team. Cam is an exceptional football player. Whatever way I can fit in and help better this team I’m going to be that guy. The guy that can help and fill a hole that was needed.”

Hayes said he was very close to joining the Dolphins as a free agent before last season. And that if he had been traded anywhere else he would have been upset.

“I’m not trying to come here and change the culture,” Hayes said. “I just want to fill that role that is needed. And help lead this team in ways that it is already probably being led.”
